“The wine book that the Australian wine industry deserves. Insightful, intelligent and in depth…An instant classic.”

As someone who has followed the Australian wine scene since 1992, it is about time for this great book by Jane Lopes and Jonathan Ross. So much has changed, not just in the past 30 years – the last 10 alone have been revelatory. To have them walk us through these changes and these wine regions, is so timely.

As an American sommelier, Australia was really one of those places that I thought was mostly full of funny critters and over-hyped wines. That is, until I met Jane and Jon – they showed me that this is a land of terroir and growers who rival many of their European counterparts. This book further solidified me falling in love with this wild continent so rich with history and a new generation of wines. An important read for both wine geeks and novices alike!

“This book from the American sommeliers Jane Lopes and Jonathan Ross manages the neat trick of offering all the geeky information of geology, geography, climate and history sought out by students while giving ordinary wine-lovers what they crave: names of producers to seek out, whether mainstream names or the vanguard wineries that, to me at least, have made Australian wine so interesting.” – Eric Asimov, The New York Times

If you seek to understand this immense place, you must start here. Australia has come an awfully long way from its early beginnings in wine, and it continues to evolve and develop in immeasurably significant leaps as a premium winemaking nation. The history is proud, the future is bright and everything we need to know about where we’ve been and where we are headed can be found right here, in the pages of How To Drink Australian. It’s a ripper read and a must-have for any serious wine lover.

about jane & jon

Jane and Jon started off their careers in the US in retail and hospitality, between them working at Eleven Madison Park, The Violet Hour, The Catbird Seat, Oceana, and others. Jane and Jon moved to Australia in 2017 to work at Attica and the Rockpool Group, respectively, and gained a quick appreciation for the wines of Australia—and how little exposure there was to them in the US. While in Australia, Jane and Jon both passed the master sommelier exam, Jane wrote her first book titled Vignette, and Jon started making wine under his own label: Micro Wines. Upon returning to the US in 2020, Jane and Jon launched Legend Imports, a company devoted solely to importing Australian wine to the US. They could not be more thrilled to be bringing the great wines (and stories)of Australia to a table near you.
