There’s never been a more exciting time to drink Australian wine. Centuries of innovation and determination have led to an era of exceptional achievement in Australia, yet it is a country whose vinous output is not matched by its scholarship. Until now. How to Drink Australian brings together global experts to answer its namesake question, offering sweeping, practical, and compelling insight on all aspects of Australian wine: exhaustive analysis of every significant wine region, stunning and detailed original maps, bespoke illustrations and artwork, individual wine recommendations, hundreds of producer profiles, a fold-out grape table, and much more, all curated with a reverence to Australia’s first custodians. How to Drink Australian is the modern wine book that Australia (and a world of wine drinkers) has been waiting for.
Capturing all the complexities of wine in contemporary Australia is a massive job, but Jane and Jon and their team of collaborators have absolutely nailed it: How to Drink Australian is an exhaustive, insightful, invaluable new guide to what’s going on right now in the vineyards and cellars – and, crucially, the hearts and minds – of winegrowers right across this dynamic country.
How to Drink Australian is INCREDIBLE. The most comprehensive book on the best Australian wines. It’s not an easy feat to bring together so much information, diving deep into the intricacies of the great regions, producers and terroirs of Australia. A must have on every wine lover’s book shelf.
As someone who has followed the Australian wine scene since 1992, it is about time for this great book by Jane Lopes and Jonathan Ross. So much has changed, not just in the past 30 years – the last 10 alone have been revelatory. To have them walk us through these changes and these wine regions, is so timely.
As an American sommelier, Australia was really one of those places that I thought was mostly full of funny critters and over-hyped wines. That is, until I met Jane and Jon – they showed me that this is a land of terroir and growers who rival many of their European counterparts. This book further solidified me falling in love with this wild continent so rich with history and a new generation of wines. An important read for both wine geeks and novices alike!
Jane Lopes and Jonathan Ross have compiled an exhaustive and intoxicating 500-page compendium of the great regions, terroirs, and rising stars and legends of Australian wine…the book may well change everything the rest of the world knows about Australian wine. – Jill Dupleix, Good Weekend Magazine
It’s the most comprehensive book about Australian wine to appear in over a decade.”
“It’s taken two savvy Americans to write the one book that every Australian wine lover needs to have in their library…Jane Lopes and Jonathan Ross – two high-flying and scarily knowledgable sommeliers – have covered just about every aspect of the wine industry in Australia, making their book a must read for both wine industry folks and wine lovers.” – Winsor Dobbin, Gourmet on the Road
It's kind of ironic that what could well be the most comprehensive book on Australian wine has been written by two Americans. How to Drink Australian is the wine book that Australia deserves.
This is an outstanding piece of work. If there is one book that anyone wanting to learn more about Australian wine should have, this is it. – Huon Hooke, The Real Review

about jane & jon
Jane and Jon started off their careers in the US in retail and hospitality, between them working at Eleven Madison Park, The Violet Hour, The Catbird Seat, Oceana, and others. Jane and Jon moved to Australia in 2017 to work at Attica and the Rockpool Group, respectively, and gained a quick appreciation for the wines of Australia—and how little exposure there was to them in the US. While in Australia, Jane and Jon both passed the master sommelier exam, Jane wrote her first book titled Vignette, and Jon started making wine under his own label: Micro Wines. Upon returning to the US in 2020, Jane and Jon launched Legend Imports,a company devoted solely to importing Australian wine to the US. They could not be more thrilled to be bringing the great wines (and stories)of Australia to a table near you.
